Serving His Country

Growing up in Noblesville, Ind. in the '50s and '60s there were certain things that you did. You went to the Fourth of July parades and proudly saluted the veterans as they marched by. In school, you said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning with your hand placed firmly over your heart. On Memorial Day, you visited the cemetery and placed flags on the gravesites of those who served their country. Some of those men were remembered through stories people told of their bravery. Some may even have shared your last name.

Luke Kenley grew up in a family that understood personal sacrifices have to be made to insure the greater good. As a boy, Luke remembers seeing faded pictures of his father in uniform and hearing tales of his service as a Navigator on B-17's during World War II. He recalls the family's bittersweet memories of his Uncle Robert who gave his life during the Korean War as a medic.

When Luke's turn came to serve his country he remembered those images from his boyhood and knew he had a debt to repay. It was a time when other young men made different choices. But not Luke. Not when you were raised a Kenley.

  • Luke completed his law degree at Harvard, but only after enlisting to serve his country during the Vietnam Conflict.
  • Luke left for Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo, on July 4, 1969.
  • After completing basic training, Luke entered Officer Candidate School and graduated first in his class.
  • Luke was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Engineering Corp.
  • While serving at Ft. Belvoir, Vir., President Nixon began withdrawing American troops from Vietnam and Luke received a reserve commission and returned to law school.
  • He was the only member of his Harvard graduating class to serve as an officer in any branch of the military.
